Living a Simpler Life
After his conversion, St. Francis delighted in a simple way of living, totally dependent upon a God who knew his every need. This personal experience enabled him to stand in solidarity with the poor and to share whatever he had with them. The story is told about a poor woman who came to Francis begging alms. Francis went to the Minister General to see if there was anything to give the woman. The Minister General replied that the only thing in the house was a copy of the New Testament, which was daily used to pray the Divine Office. Francis immediately said to give the woman this Bible because it was more pleasing to God that she should have it than that the friars should read from it.
It is not easy to live simply within a consumeristic society where more is better. However, the resulting freedom and inner peace are blessings that fill and satisfy the heart. As the Gospel reminds us: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Mt. 6:21)
